History of the Museum

The National Museum of Agriculture (NMA) is one of the most important institutions of its kind in Central Europe. Its roots date back to 1891, but it was officially established as an independent institution in 1918. From the very beginning, its mission has been to carefully document and preserve the rich history of agriculture, fisheries, hunting, forestry, and the food industry.

The museum has undergone a thorough renovation and has opened new, modern exhibitions that showcase the development of agriculture, traditional crafts, and ecology. Visitors can interactively explore historical farming technology, discover how food is made, and learn about the fascinating relationship between nature and human labor.

A unique rooftop terrace was also created during the renovation, offering an impressive view of Prague.

Present Day

Today, the National Museum of Agriculture is a modern institution that combines history with contemporary trends. In addition to its main building in Prague, the museum has several branches in other cities across the Czech Republic:

What Exhibitions Can You See?

The National Museum of Agriculture in Prague offers a wide variety of fascinating exhibitions:

Agriculture Exhibition

This exhibit features unique items, including many preserved specimens of farm animals. Its highlight is the bull Cesar – the top sire from the first Czech artificial insemination station. You can also see the famous plough by the Veverka cousins, which marked a new era of innovation in 19th-century agriculture.

Tractors Exhibition

This exhibition showcases tractors manufactured between 1917 and 1953. Some of them can be climbed on and explored by visitors. There is also an interactive tractor simulator and other farming equipment, such as motor-driven threshers.

Gastronomy Exhibition

A must-see for food lovers. Explore the kitchens of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers, traditional foods, and historic dining customs. Learn about the evolution of cooking in the Czech lands.

Water in the Landscape Exhibition

This educational exhibition features a 3D model of the Czech Republic, explaining the journey of water—how it functions in nature, how we manage it, and how we protect it.

Fisheries Exhibition

This exhibit focuses on the work of Czech fishermen and fish farming. Visitors can discover both traditional and modern fishing methods. Large aquariums display freshwater fish such as carp, pike, and catfish.

Hunting Exhibition

This exhibition traces the history of hunting and highlights its importance in nature conservation and landscape management. Visitors can learn about hunting traditions, equipment, and the role of hunters in the ecosystem. A hands-on section allows guests to try out the skills and reflexes of a hunter.

Discovery Room

This space is designed for curious minds of all ages. It hosts lectures, educational programs, and interactive experiences related to farming and nature.

Living Garden of Views

The museum’s rooftop garden features beehives, a small agricultural plot, and a relaxation zone, along with a stunning view of Prague.

Little Farmyard

An outdoor exhibit focused on small livestock. Visitors can see chickens, rabbits, ducks, and other domestic animals.

Children will especially enjoy the kids’ zone and special interactive elements, where they can touch and try everything for themselves.

Opening Hours and Admission

The National Museum of Agriculture is located at Kostelní Street 44, Prague 7. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The museum is open year-round, except on selected national holidays.
